General course requirements for the Master’s and Doctoral Degrees
Master’s Degree: Environmental Science Master’s students must complete 38 credits.
Of this total, 18 credits will correspond to core courses. Typically, an additional 6 credits
will correspond to emphasis areas, 2 credits to a graduate seminar, 6 credits to elective classes, and 6 credits to graduate research leading towards a Master’s thesis. While a master’s degree typically takes 1-2 years, some programs or students may require 3 years to complete, depending on factors like program structure, research requirements, and individual pace
Doctoral Degree: Environmental Science Doctoral students must complete 60 credits.
Of this total, 18 credits correspond to core courses. Typically, 9 credits will correspond to emphasis areas, 2 credits to a graduate seminar, 4 credits to an emphasis area seminar, 9 credits to elective courses, and 18 credits to graduate research leading toward a Doctoral dissertation. While some doctoral programs aim for a four-year completion, the actual time to finish a PhD can vary significantly, often taking longer due to research and dissertation requirements, with the average completion time being around 5-7 years.
