Welcome to the Department of Environmental Sciences at UPR Rio Piedras. The Environmental Sciences (ES) Undergraduate Program began in 1976 as the first academic program in Puerto Rico established to train environmental professionals to assist in the implementation of the established Puerto Rico Environmental Policy Act of 1970. Our current curriculum offers students the opportunity to immerse themselves in the thorough study of environmental science, focusing on disciplinary studies of terrestrial, aquatic, marine ecosystems, or human-dominated ecosystems, as well as integrative topics such as sustainability. An important factor in the success of the Program has been our excellent and committed faculty who bring abundant research opportunities to students.

We aim to apply an integrated, quantitative, and interdisciplinary focus to studying natural and human systems and provide the students (undergraduate and graduate) with the skills and knowledge necessary to successfully advance in an academic, industrial, or government setting. Our program encompasses disciplines from both the physical sciences (e.g., biology, mathematics, chemistry, physics, geology, and engineering) as well as the social sciences (e.g., public health, sociology, economics, geography, public policy, education, and planning).
