Essential Job Duties

The objectives of this research are to assist with data collection to establish species-habitat relationships of birds, amphibians and insect pollinators along an elevation gradient that encompass secondary forests, sun and shade coffee plantations. The research technician will be involved in the collection and cataloging of field data, and data entry in electronic format for subsequent analyses. Collection of data includes sampling insect pollinators, relocating automated acoustic recording devices, installing devices (HOBOS) to monitor climatic parameters (humidity, temperature), and counting resident avifauna (e.g., point counts). The technician will gain experience in field techniques and sampling, and decision analysis for conservation. The technician will also interact with scientists, students, and staff from State and Federal Natural Resources Agencies.

Minimum Experience/Education

Applicants must have a BS in Science (wildlife, entomology). Field experience in wildlife projects preferred.

Candidate must be able to conduct field work, which includes counting landbirds (e.g., resident avifauna), sampling insects, assist with pollinator identification, set up devices to record climatic parameters (e.g., temperature, rainfall) and anuran calls. The candidate should be able to do word processing and data entry on database spreadsheets (e.g., excel, access), and basic summarization of data (e.g., descriptive statistics).

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education

Applicants must have a BS in Biological or Environmental Sciences (wildlife, entomology). Previous experience (at least 1 year) with field based research, invertebrate sampling techniques, wildlife and monitoring techniques (e.g., surveys). Proficient in computer applications such as Word and Excel. It is imperative that the applicant be organized, professional, self-motivated, able to receive instruction and carry out detailed tasks, and able to work well in both independent and group settings.
