UPR SEPA Project Cohorts

The UPR Asthma Awareness STEM Program will assist in the education and training of Puerto Rican 9-12 grades students through the teaching of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) to develop them as a competitive future knowledge-based society. The project will create and foster the interest of STEM participants through informal and hands-on experiences aimed to rise asthma awareness among Puerto Ricans.

The Puerto Rico Department of Education in its Circular Letter No. 2-2016-2017 demands and promotes the professional improvement of all teachers. This type of activity takes place during off-hours, especially on Saturdays.

The SEPA program will focus on fourteen (14) public and 3 private schools, we estimate that approximately 60 sciences and math teachers will have an active participation and approximately 1,500 students will be impacted during the five years plan proposed. This will be done in 3 cohorts: Year one (2021-2022) will be constituted with 5 public and 1 private schools (first cohort) which implies approximately 15-20 teachers and 550 students, In the second year (2022-2023) (4) new public and one (1) private schools will be added, (second cohort). The third cohort will have the same number of schools of the first cohort. This implies the addition of approximately of 15-20 teachers and 450 new students per cohorts. The year one cohort will overlap with the year two cohort in such a way that they support the second cohort in certain activities and share their experience. For the third cohort, teachers from the previous cohorts will be invited with the same intention of support.
