The Magueyes Island Marine Station is operated by the Department of Marine Sciences of the University of Puerto Rico at Mayaguez. It is located on an 18-acre island offshore the fishing village of La Parguera in southern Puerto Rico. It is surrounded by a diverse array of marine habitats, including coral reefs, mangroves, seagrass beds, rocky and sandy beaches, and hypersaline pools.
