Forest Resources

Throughout its history, Puerto Rico has had significant changes in the type of land use that has influenced the dynamics of the island's forests. In the middle of the last century, most of the island was dedicated to agricultural production and forestry, as demonstrated by Kennaway & Helmer, (2007).

Fifty years later, social, economic, political, and cultural changes in Puerto Rico have stimulated an increase in forest cover, to the detriment of agricultural production areas. The majority of the country's population left the rural areas for the development of urban areas. These rural areas were recovered by the forest developing the secondary forests in Puerto Rico. By the year 200, the coverage maps of the island were much more "green" than in the 1950s.
