Urban Community Forestry

This project seeks to formalize a working academic and community network to improve urban forest planning and delivery of green infrastructure to communities within the Río Piedras watershed with limited forest cover. We propose to facilitate community level tree stewardship and justice-centered urban forest by:

  • Conducting tree inventory campaigns at the neighborhood scale complemented with basic tree management training for residents.
  • Developing community-level tree management and participatory urban forest plans collectively agreed upon common aims and objectives
  • Creating a community River Network that unites three additional communities within the Rio Piedras watershed: University Gardens, Villa Nevárez, and Jardines Metropolitanos.
  • Developing multiple communication products to increase awareness of the benefits of urban forests.
