EVENT DESCRIPTION
Data Science Workshop at Copamarina Hotel in Guánica, Puerto Rico.
This workshop will be held in two parts, first the students will enter the Guánica Dry Forest Natural Reserve with the professors and collect data that will be used in the second part, where a series of statistical and descriptive analyzes will be carried out using the R programming language. At the end of the workshop, students will present their results to professors and other students.
EVENT CONTENT
- Hotel accommodation included (shared rooms)
- All meals included (breakfast, lunch, dinner)
- Half day field trip to Guánica State Forest (transportation arranged)
- Four different projects (pollination, vegetation diversity, mollusk diversity, M. intortus population assessment) will be carried out. Students will be divided into the respective groups, according to the project, to collect data.
- Acquire skills to structure data for statistical analysis in R (data entry).
- Learn the basic programming skills to use R language for statistical analyses, from an expert in R.
- Acquire skills to carry out a scientific literature research to support hypothesis and conclusions.
- Learn to prepare a 15 minute symposia style presentation to share the research findings.
- Exposure to the feedback and counseling of UPR ecology professors that will be present during the workshop.
