It is a national society that welcomes the membership of people from all racial and ethnic groups. The mission of the MANRRS is to “promote academic and professional advancement by the empowerment of minorities in agriculture, natural resources, and related sciences”. It also offers students the opportunity to “enhance leadership and organizational and public speaking skills, and to experience the professional critique of scholarly work in a user friendly environment”. The first ever virtual National Conference will take place on April 7-10, 2021. (The information regarding the application dates and specific instructions is forthcoming). [accordion title=”USDA-Agricultural Research Service (ARS) Pathways Programs” load=”hide”]The Agricultural Research Service (ARS) is the chief scientific research agency in the United States Department of Agriculture’s Research, Education and Economics (REE) mission area. The job of the ARS’s is the delivery of “cutting-edge, scientific tools and innovative solutions for American farmers, producers, industry, and communities”. The purpose is to support the “nourishment and well-being of all people, to sustain the nation’s agroecosystems and natural resources, and to ensure the economic competitiveness and excellence of our agriculture”. The ARS hires students during the school year and each summer for various roles throughout the organization.

[accordion title=”Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Scientific Internships ” load=”hide”]The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is an enforcement agency within the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS). It is responsible for the enforcement of the federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act; the Fair Packaging and Labeling Act; and the Nutritional Labeling and Education Act among others. The FDA offers many paths to learning about the exciting field of regulatory science. These paths include the Undergraduate, Graduate, and Post-Graduate Training Programs.
These FDA training opportunities provide experiences in 13 different programs from food safety and applied nutrition internships to regulatory science fellowships in a variety of areas, including oncology, and pharmacology. The Summer Research – Early Identification Program (SR – EIP) provides all-expenses paid summer internships in life and physical sciences, social and behavioral sciences and the humanities for sophomore, junior and senior undergraduate students. [accordion title=”University of Nebraska’s Minority Health Disparities Initiative Research Experience” load=”hide”]The University of Nebraska-Lincoln offers the Minority Health Disparities Initiative Research Experience for Undergraduates. This program is supported by a Summer REU grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF) for research in using novel methods in order to study health disparities, focusing on understanding social context. Participating students will learn about the following: application of the relevant methods, such as social network analyses, community-engaged methodologies and social context assessment tools. Participants will be able to develop hypotheses and also learn how to design and conduct health disparities related research studies in order to employ these skills where possible in their summer research projects. Nutrition is among the related fields that should apply to this program.

This program provides students with the opportunity for independent research projects focused in molecular biosciences such as the following: gene expression analyses; chromatin structure/function; protein characterization and manipulation; cell molecular architecture; tumor virus molecular biology; molecular mechanisms of ion channels and neurotransmitter release; protein folding; structure and function; molecular neurobiology; developmental mechanisms; proteomics; detection of food-borne pathogens; plant molecular biology and metabolism; cardiovascular physiology and development; DNA repair and telomeres in cancer and aging; and prions in neurodegenerative diseases. Each undergraduate will be assigned to a specific faculty member’s research laboratory, where the student has the opportunity to work closely with a faculty mentor, postdoctoral associates, as well as graduate students.

[accordion title=”University of Toronto” load=”hide”]The Department of Nutritional Sciences from the University of Toronto offers an Undergraduate Summer Research Opportunity Program as a chance for undergraduate students to become involved in research within various aspects of nutrition such as the following: diet and cancer; cardiovascular disease; diabetes; osteoporosis; aging; nutrition, cognitive function, brain development, food intake regulation and feeding behaviour, pediatric nutrition from neonate to teenager, biochemical and physiological function of food components (fiber, fatty acids, and antioxidants), nutrition and poverty, and clinical nutrition. This program offers stipends from $4,000 to $6,000 depending on the number of research weeks.
