Brief History 

The College of Natural Sciences (CNS) was established in 1943 by dividing the Faculty of Arts and Sciences into three distinct units: Humanities, Social Sciences and Natural Sciences. Under the leadership of its first dean, Dr. Facundo Bueso (1943-1959), the new College was composed of four departments (Mathematics, Chemistry, Biology and Physics) with sub-programs strictly graduates. Over the next 71 years, this small initial project evolve into a complex faculty currently consists of six departments: Mathematics, Chemistry, Biology, Physics, Environmental Science and Computing Science (five of them with sub-graduates and graduates of master’s programs and / or doctoral), a program of Bachelor of Nutrition and Dietetics and Interdisciplinary Program.

The CNS started its graduate programs with the degree of Master of Science and Arts in 1960 and continued to grow as presented below:

Facilities

The CNS consists of four buildings in the Río Piedras campus (Facundo Bueso, Julio Garcia Diaz, New Natural Sciences and Janer). They hold a total of 75 research laboratories, 40 teaching laboratories, 40 classrooms, three amphitheaters and five computer labs. The CNS has a valuable collection of highly sophisticated laboratory equipment, cutting edge technology and an online communication platform for interconnecting their units with the Río Piedras and the rest of the world. The CNS also has new facilities and research laboratories for common use, fully equipped with the most advanced technologies in the Research Center for Molecular Sciences in Cupey. In addition, the CNS houses other facilities and services that underpin their academic offerings such as a Center for Information and Technology (CITEC) that integrates resources and related information to technology services, the Museum and experimental stations in El Verde (Yunque) and Fajardo.

Human Resources

The CNS has more than 150 teachers responsible for educating graduate and under-graduate student population. Academic and research work of the teaching staff are supported by sub-graduates and graduate students, post-doctorates, laboratory technicians, and staff.

Toward Internationalization

It should be noted that a significant number of graduate students, post-doctorates and CNS teachers from other countries such as Colombia, Mexico, Dominican Republic, Venezuela, Cuba, Costa Rica, Panama, Haiti, China, India, France, Germany Russia and the United States, among others. This shows clearly how in recent years has strengthened and adopted CNS graduate programs for internationalization and / or globalization.

Achievements

As documented in the annual reports of the CNS, among the outstanding achievements it recognized: 1) significant external funding to finance research projects (funds rising to nearly $ 20 million in current projects); 2) a prolific publication of scientific articles in refereed journals and / or book chapters (over 300 publications per year); 3) numerous presentations and lectures at national and international conferences (about 500 per year), 4) the recognition of our students through awards and grants obtained in competitive scenarios (obtaining prestigious scholarships such as the Fulbright, Mellon Mays, and NSF, as well as prizes in international competitions including those related to computer programming and undergraduate research ); 5) The presence of a teaching staff in leadership positions in international companies, examination boards and government agencies.
