APPLICATION FOR THE SUMMER RESEARCH NIST SURF 2017 GAITHERSBURG DEADLINE: FEBRUARY 6th, 2017
Every year the Resource Center for Science and Engineering of the University of Puerto Rico through the Puerto Rico Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation, coordinates the attendance of undergraduate students for the Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF*) at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) at Gaithersburg. The National Institute of Standards and Technology is one of the most prestigious national laboratories in the United States.
(*Applications for participation in the SURF program are accepted only from colleges or universities and not from individual students or faculty.)
On the last link above, you will find a copy of the application and general information regarding the internship and the available research laboratories. The applications CANNOT be sent independently to NIST, only the PR-LSAMP is authorized to process and send the applications that will be received in our office from the date of this communication until February 6th, 2017. This will allow us to evaluate and prepare all the necessary documentation that will be submitted to NIST. The applications must comply with all the specifications in the NIST SURF 2017 application form. All the recommendation letters, evidence of citizenship, curriculum vitae, personal statements, and transcript must be sealed and addressed to Prof. Javier Figueroa, PR-LSAMP Academic Coordinator. INCOMPLETE APPLICATIONS WILL NOT BE PROCESSED.
ALL DOCUMENTS AND RECOMMENDATION LETTERS MUST BE IN ENGLISH. DOCUMENTS IN SPANISH WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED.
Students should apply only to the Gaithersburg SURF 2017 program.
All interested students must prepare and organize a manila envelope with all the required documentation and send it via certified mail, with 5 days prior to the deadline to ensure their in time arrival, to the following address:

The basic criteria for applications is a GPA of 3.0 or more. Once the federal agency has selected the students that will participate they will award them with a stipend of approximately $5,500 (for a 10 week internship). The award will be divided in 3 partial payments through the entire summer internship duration. Also lodging expenses and up to a maximum of $500 for airfare expenses will be covered.
Once the student is accepted by the NIST-SURF program, the student cannot cancel their participation. Every student must have an active email account due to the fact that all communications with NIST are through email.
