Seminar:Practical and Simple Parallel Computation in the Cloud

Date: October 18, 2010 10:00 AM

The next talk  in the Computational Parallel Thinking invited speaker series is funded through our CPATH award.   Talk's title is Practical and Simple Parallel Computation in the Cloud and will be given by Dr. Malewicz.  Dr. Malewicz is a staff software engineer at Google and a co-founder of the Pregel Project, which will the subject of his talk.  Following are the additional details:

Time: October 18, 2010 @ 10:00 AM
Place: Natural Sciences Building, Room A 211

Abstract: Many companies, including Google, operate data centers consisting of networked commodity computers. Solving practical computational problems on such data centers can be challenging because of data imbalances, and computer delays and failures.  Many models of computation have complicated semantics, making programming difficult.  Google has introduced models of computation that meet the challenges.  In this talk I will describe the models and fundamental principles that explain why realizing the models efficiently at scale is possible. I will also argue why parallel programming in the models is simple.
