The second term of the Puerto Rico-Chemical Learning Integrated in Materials and Biomolecular applications (PR-CLIMB) NSF REU site at the University of Puerto Rico Río Piedras Campus took place this past summer. During the program, Froylan Omar Fernández, an undergraduate student at Millersville University, worked under the mentorship of Prof. Vilmalí López-Stelzer and Gabriel E. Quiñones Vélez and Israel Rodríguez Rodríguez. He was always a very enthusiastic and motivated participant. He was awarded the First Place Best Poster Award for his research presentation in our REU site. This past October 14, 2017 he participated in the 20th Undergraduate Research Symposium in the Chemical and Biological Sciences at the University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC). There he received a Second Place Best Poster Award for his research presentation. Now we are really excited to announce that the NSF REU Leadership Group selected Froylan for an Honorable Mention recognition. As part of this recognition he will receive a $500 travel award to attend the 255th ACS National Meeting & Exposition in New Orleans. We are extremely proud of all of Froylan’s accomplishments. These are very inspiring news especially in light of recent events in Puerto Rico. The PR CLIMB program, like other mentorship programs at our university, continues to demonstrate high caliber research and professional development for students in the sciences.
